X-Treme Camp
Children Ages 10-15
Older children enjoy a full day of outdoor activities during X-treme Camp. This summer, we’re adventuring in and out of the county as we enjoy activities like cave exploration, canoeing, survival, and more.
Camp will be held select Thursdays in the summer. Campers should meet at Rock Springs Nature Center at the designated time. Bring a sack lunch. A fee of $60/camper covers all activities. Pick and choose which weeks to attend, or join us for all of them.
Space is limited to 12 campers each week and camp activities are subject to change.

2026 X-treme Weekly Camps
Laser Tag at Wildlife Prairie Park
Travel with us to Hanna City, IL to Wildlife Prairie Park – an 1,800-acre zoo that features only historically-native Illinois animals, like mountain lions, foxes, and bison! We will start our day with a friendly laser tag adventure, then spend the afternoon exploring the park.
Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Park
Venture north to LaSalle County to explore Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks. Hike the trails, view the bluffs and canyons, and visit a waterfall. At the end of the day, we will make a short stop at Buffalo Rock to view bison.
Creek Walk
Spend the day walking through a creek at Sand Creek Conservation Area. Campers will have nets to catch wildlife that live in the creeks, see animals that live along the creek, and enjoy nature from a different setting. Bring a backpack, shoes that can get wet, a towel, and extra clothes to change into at the end of the day.
Canoeing and Fishing
Start the day with a fishing demonstration with a Fisheries Biologist from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, where we will learn how to fish and how to identify what we catch. After lunch, we will travel to Cannon Park to paddle a canoe down Big Creek and on a portion of Lake Decatur.
Exploring Illinois Caverns
Venture into the Illinois Caverns in Southern Illinois, located near Waterloo, where we will explore a “wild” cave. Be prepared to get muddy and wet. You will need to wear sturdy shoes and bring a change of clothes, a towel, and lunch. Campers will be required to attend a meeting on Thursday, July 9th at 5:30pm to meet our guide for the cave exploration and receive further information.
Survival Skills
Take a trip to Friends Creek Conservation Area to learn survival skills and put them to the test. We will try our hand at tent building, fire building, shelter building, and orienteering, and we will roast hot dogs over the fire we build!
